Job Description

You will be a key part of the Upstream team as they navigate the implementation and execution of the strategy within a fast-paced, uncertain environment.

You will be responsible for managing and providing mining regulatory advisory services in jurisdictions where De Beers Group Upstream operates or has an interest. This role will engage with relevant functional stakeholders in order to identify and monitor risks and legal requirements, procure and deliver legal support for business outcomes and minimize risks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the De Beers strategy by providing robust and comprehensive services on mining regulations.
  • Lead the vision, strategy and objectives for the mining regulations discipline in order to provide effective legal support throughout the Upstream business.
  • Design and implement an integrated legal framework to provide mining regulatory services for the Upstream business.
  • Provide comprehensive legal support, including mining law, licensing and environmental law, rights and water rights, and community, indigenous, and collective title rights over mining land. Also, ensure social performance and community involvement.
  • To ensure that legal strategies are aligned with business objectives, it is important to cultivate strong relationships within the organization.
  • Assess legal risks, provide advice and mitigation strategies.
  • Work with the Legal Manager – Dispute Resolution on any litigation or mediating processes relating to mining regulations and ESG issues.
  • To increase efficiency and effectiveness, continuously evaluate and refine the legal processes in your discipline.
  • Develop and implement training initiatives to ensure compliance with mining regulations.
  • Work with colleagues to improve essential resources such as templates and best practices guides.
  • Manage relationships with external law firms to ensure cost-effective and high-quality service.
  • Budget for legal support in mining regulation.
  • Harmonize group and legal objectives with senior leadership.

Qualifications

  • Qualified as a legal practitioner/admitted attorney in one or more of the jurisdictions in which the De Beers Group has operations or does business.
  • Experience in the mining sector is preferred.
  • Specialization in mining law and/or environmental regulation in one or more jurisdictions where De Beers operates. Exposure to collective, indigenous, and community title rights, social performance and community engagement.
  • Expertise in assessing potential legal risks and offering advice, as well as recommending mitigation strategies.
  • The ability to draft, review, and interpret complex legal documents with clarity and coherence.
  • Ability to develop and implement specialized legal education initiatives.
  • Fluency when communicating with internal and external stakeholders.
  • It is preferable to have experience leading a team of lawyers in a private practice at a large international or regional firm (at the partner or senior associate levels) or within an organization (at the senior level).
