Requirements
MBChB qualification (degree) that permits registration with the HPCSA in the role of a Medical Practitioner. Registration with the HPCSA for Medical Practitioner (2025). NB: A Medical Officer appointed must be able work in shifts. Non-South Africans will need a valid work permit. Medical ethics is a must. Experience in multidisciplinary teamwork, management and medical disciplines. Knowledge of the current Health and Public Service Regulations and Policies. Skills in consultations, history-taking, examinations, clinical assessment, and clinical management. Grade 1: After registration with the HPCSA, as a Medical Practitioner (Independent practice), no experience is required. For foreign qualified employees, a minimum of one year relevant experience is required after registration as a Medical Practitioner with the HPCSA or a recognised Foreign Health Professions. Knowledge, skills, training and competencies required: Solid knowledge of medical ethics. Experience in medical disciplines and multidisciplinary teamwork. Solid clinical knowledge and competency in all clinical domains. Ability to work efficiently as a team member under supervision. Communication, leadership, interpersonal and supervisory skills are all important. Ability to manage patient independently, with diligence, and responsibility. Knowledge of the current health policies and legislation. Ability to guide, teach and mentor junior staff in the department. Behavioural attributes: Tolerance to stress, ability to work in a team, confidence, and to maintain good relationships.

Duties
Execute duties and functions proficiently, in support of the Institution’s aims and goals that are consistent with the standards of patient care. Accept responsibility for managing patients admitted to a package of services level 2/3. Assist with the development and implementation of guidelines, protocols and other documents. Participate in educational and training programmes. Knowledge of medicine and clinical practice. Ability to handle all medical emergencies. Knowledge of ethical principles in medical practice. Participate in professional development and assist with clinical audits. Support hospital management in maintaining a high standard of care and service for patients.
